major setback due to kilz primer

looks like you're showing that the track paint didn't stick to the primer. that sure bites. sand and repaint, i guess...
i assume that it was allowed to dry thoroughly first.
i've used Killz on a wall in a Florida screen room, and the latex paint seemed to stick ok. then again, i didn't try to peel up tape from it when it was dry.

i have a house in Satellite Beach where we spend the holidays. i'd love to make it out to your place some time.
what i'd actually done was repair my mother-in-laws's (since passed) condo in Hypoluxo (land of the dim bulbs, if you get that one).Last edited by SpeedyNH; July 22, 2020, 06:32 PM.

used kilz latex primer for lane paint. looks like it released chemicals that caused the paint to release.in the process of sanding everything and will reaply the tracks shark skin top coat color. all the other lanes were fine. no primer used. my heart sank. ive used kilz for a primer lots and never had a problem. This really blows.. i let the lane colors dry for two days. oh well, whats another 400 feet of sanding gains with small nail files.im having a beer.

For what it's worth, I painted the gains first. Let that dry for 3-4 days, then I masked the gains and painted the track surface. I used HD Behr brand latex with the primer built in, whatever that means. I did make sure the gains were sanded good. I figured the last thing I wanted was a poorly etched gain surface and low paint adhesion. I did get it etched good. When I pulled up braid to re-do one corner, it pulled the paint a little but mostly the gains stayed painted and the braid tape is what pulled loose. Good luck repairing. It is just wood and paint. All it takes is more time.Matt B

Dominator:
Sorry to hear of the issues with Kilz. Just when you think you are finished, you have another big task ahead of you.
Just like life - One step forward, two steps back...
I know you'll "dominate" (at least with the track paint) Ha ha ha...

Intresting that the paint pulling up is only next to the white lane? or that what the pictures show.
What did you paint the while slot with? the picture show red and blue lanes, the tape has come off clean.Lance Sofa racer, SA TX by way of Hawaii

Oh, that sucks! Well, lucky it's only the white lane where the Kilz was applied where it's affected. I know it's disheartening. Just a few months after Leadfinger and I built Slotzuka the ceiling leaked and ruined one end of the track. After all the work we put into building it, neither one of us wanted to jump right in and fix it. But we did, and in some ways the rebuild is better than the original. You'll get it done. I'm sure.Team SCANC

the track has been sanded for the millionth time. going to wipe it down with gasoline to clean it then a final coat of the track color. if that doesnt work, ill use more gasoline too burn it.By the way, im not going to use gas to clean it.bill ,framingham ma

Was it oil based Kilz? That takes much, much, longer to cure after its dry. There is also an over/under rule about oil and latex coverings. I avoid it by using oil with oil and latex with latex or acrylic. I don't even remember which was which in the rule, I have used my own rule for so long.
Regular latex Kilz will give a false indication of dryness if its on too thick. The thing to remember about primers is that the chemical is what does the work. The color pigment is mostly just to show you where you have been and to cover greasy stains.
