  • Land & Sea - landscaping after a 12 year wait

Was contemplating building a new track but after returning from my winter break and giving the twelve year old a run, I said to myself, ``I still enjoy this track``. What's been missing all these years is landscaping, the feature I so admire in other tracks.

Over the years, I`ve had the pleasure of running thousands of laps on Luf`s, a fellow GVSCC member, track creations. My favorite was the long gone upstairs Targa Burnaby, so that was my aim, a compressed three-lane version on an 8`x 12` foot print.

I really appreciated the elevation changes on the original Targa, so that was going to be a feature of mine. Lane squeezes were also in vogue at the time at Luf`s so thinking the inner and middle lanes were fastest, I routed slots for the cars to get in each other`s way.

Today, in preparation for landscaping, the track and table were given a good vacuuming and cleaning.

My favorite part of the layout is running anti-clockwise, from the bottom sweeping up the hill, a two foot rise over a ten foot length, with a small jog to the right into a corner and back down.

With the theme of Land & Sea, a mix of ocean, coastal shoreline and stone cliffs seems appropriate. I`ll throw in some buildings here and there for some contrast.

This will be all new to me so fortunately, I`ve got advice and techniques from scale rail roaders and of course, the internet.

Really looking forward to trying new things and hopefully getting a pleasing scenic outcome.

    Dan

Yep, this one. Not the ones in your first post.
          Very cool layout!

I can see this last one but I cannot see the pictures in the original post either. One possibility: I have found that if you are using hosting you have to make sure that the image is available to the public?

@ FC47 - the serpentine radii from inner to outer lanes are approximately 7, 10 and 13 inches. They're slightly banked so have a nice rhythm driving back and forth.

I seem to have a problem in editing the initial post with pics so I'll try in this one.

"My favorite part of the layout is running anti-clockwise, from the bottom sweeping up the hill, a two foot rise over a ten foot length, with a small jog to the right into a corner and back down."

The rest of the track is pretty curvaceous with less dramatic elevation changes but challenging and fun.

as for the hard part-I’m sure you can do it!

I can definitely see Luf's influence on that track in the squeeze sections and the elevation changes. He influenced my Woodland Trace Raceway too. Looks like that's going to be a fantastic ride! I can't wait to see it landscaped.

How much of an elevation is that in the highest corner?

The top of the hill corner is 24 inches above the table top which in turn is 24 inches from the floor.

Most racers stand at the three driver stations at the bottom but because of the low table height you can sit on a chair or stool for a reasonable view.

Beautiful track, Dan. The uphill sweep sure would be fun. Looking forward to scenery. Knowing your builds, I am sure it will be fantastic!

how do the middle-to-inner chicanes work racing?

The chicane/squeeze sections make for interesting racing. You've got to be patient if you're behind a slower car and wait until you can safely pass. Not easy when you're all side-by-side as we all seem to go for it, not letting up, in hope of getting through first.

It does make for some laughter but frowns too.

First progress has been installing proper guard rails.

Ron J, GVSCC clubmate, created, molded and installed these on his Pandemic track looking quite realistic and functional.

The profile is realistic and they're flexible, apparently composed of gypsum, linseed oil and other materials.

They're flat on the other side, brush paint well and were easily glue epoxied with clamping to my mdf material posts.

The continuous guard rails provide a better background to see the moving cars compared to my previous foam guards.

Really pleased with this change, visually and functionally.
