  • Watkins Glen in Wood - Update

Here’s an update of my attempt to build a scaled down version of Watkins Glen International in my basement. This topic was originally started on the old HRW site. You can reach the old site here
https://www.homeracingworld.us/viewt...p?f=22&t=15767 . It contains the build history and construction photos from the very beginning, to the start of adding grass and Armco fencing.

I have now completed all of the foam terrain work on the track perimeter and infield, and all fencing is installed and painted. This was a major milestone in the construction timeline; finally, it’s starting to look a completed track. Next task will be permanently routing all the TrackMate, power, and flat screen monitor cables to a “race control” area. Future plans include pit boxes, spectator stands, flagging stations, signs, billboards, and trees.

Here are some photos of the current track.

Hi Bob, Great job all round !!..........it would appear that you have modelled the track on its more recent appearance, as the "bog" is clearly missing

    Again, great job

    Cheers

Thanks for the comment, but what is "pdx" ???

Glad to see you bring your Watkins Glen to the new board, Bob. I followed your old thread and borrowed your guard rail idea for my own track. Your step by step instructions were valuable. Though the process was very time consuming, the result was worth it. Thanks very much.

What did you use for the blue strips on the guard rails? My oval will have a PVC 'concrete' wall around the outside, but something like what you have will look great in the infield.

The Armco rails are composed of 14 ga UF-B outdoor cable. On Bob’s original thread, linked in the first entry of this thread, construction of the Armco is covered beginning on page 7.

(I tried to comment in post #7 above but couldn’t get the “comment” function to work. I must be missing something.)

Hey Scott, I remember you from the old VHORS t-jet days. This is Bob Edwards (Thunder Engineering) as you can see I've gone to the dark side (1:32). I occasionally race with the local IHSR group. If your still in the area you should join us sometime.

If you go to link to the Old HRW Forum I provided in the first post of this topic, there is a short video of the first laps on this track. It is on Page 5, under 11/8/17 post, "First Laps" just click on the picture.
