69 Mustang Sportsman

After one brass chassis car why not another, this will be for the Sportsman class. I figured I may as well get going on this one.
I had a bought a 70 Camaro then found a 69 Mustang body so thought I may as well use it as it had no interior and had a broken chassis that couldn't be repaired. the chassis still had the front valance section so it was a good candidate.
Got the chassis built.

Got the wheel openings enlarged and a new one piece rear panel.

Being 1:32 with an inline the interior is a flat tray with styrene handmade roll bars, a driver and seat section from a Scalextric rally car, a piece of styrene rod for a steering wheel and a new resin head.

Just waiting for the decals and finish the painting of the body.

Man that looks racy, Brad. I guess I need to jump in and see if I can build something in 1/32. I can't do work like most of you, but seeing these builds really makes me want to attempt a car or two.

With all of you posting pictures of your builds it encouraged me and the rest of us to give it a shot. As far as I'm concerned, building a scale car is just as rewarding as restoring a 1:1 car. The bonus: it doesn't take as long or cost near as much. lol

Sadly the decals for my Sportsman didn't arrive in time to sent it for the Showdown but I'm ready for next year. After ordering them in October, getting the wrong ones, the replacements getting lost in the mail, the decals arrived today.
I had the white painted on the body more that two months ago so got it masked up after measuring the side numbers for fitment.
I used 1mm fine line tape for the stripe that wraps around the car and on the hood then clear coated to help prevent/reduce bleed under. The blue stipe is approximately 0.5mm wide.


I used Testors dark blue from a spray can but sprayed it into a container to spray it on with the air brush. I don't like to leave the tape on for very long before removing so they paint has a better chance of staying on the body and not coming off with the tape. The blue was still pretty tacky when I took it off but worked well.
There were a couple small spots where the blue got under the tape onto the white but was easily removed with 2000 grit wet sandpaper heavily rinsed in a bucket. You can see the blue on the white paint above the wheel opening in the picture on the left.

There were a few blow throughs that will get touched up with a brush and some white paint once the enamel has fully dried.

Too bad the decals hadn't arrived a week earlier, it may have made it for the 2022 Showdown.

I got the decals on and a few quick coats of clear this morning.



A couple last minute paint touchups and the clear coat applied tonight, so should get it finished up this weekend.


I'm still looking for the correct wheels but can finish up everything else in the mean time.
