is there a option to be automatically signed in when logging onto the forums? I get signed out every time I leave for a period.

The default auto-logoff when there is no activity is 15 minutes - this is a forum-wide default (vBulletin does not provide a user configurable option to adjust this). If you check the "Remember Me" box when logging on, you can stay logged on for at least 24 hours (even with no activity). Depending on the browser you use, the browser can also (securely) remember your username and password for the forum which makes it much easier/quicker to login when required.
