Over the weekend I ran the Tacoma 24hr Enduro. It was my first year running with my local club, and we put together a 5 man team to take on the event.
I showed up early Friday morning to help prepare the cars. This year we ran a different format. We used 3 cars, each one for a 8 hr race, points were assessed to each race, the most points wins.
The idea behind this system is that if you have problem in one race, you don't have people getting discouraged and leaving early etc. I think for the most part it worked out for us, although we ran a mixed car race for the first and third legs. I think this was a mistake because track conditions and such changed for the second round of cars, possibly changing the overall result for that "class".
We were supplied BRM's latest offerings. A Mini cooper, a Opel Kadett, and a Simca 1000. They had foam rear tires, and revoslot 21k motors on board. We had to install a Zmachines light kit in the Kadett and build up the cars. Our team took great care to glue in all the bushing etc and loctite screws. Which paid off for us, we needed only one pit stop during the whole race for a mechanical fix.
We struggled to find rhythm with mini in the first race, and finish the race 4th. We had our three "fastest" guys for the night portion, so we decided it was our chance to make up some ground. The team and myself put together some of the best driving I have ever seen, going more than 35min without a deslot at one point.
We ended up second when dawn broke!
We finished strong with another 2nd place finish in the Simca, ultimately locking down 3rd place overall for the event. This was the best finish ever for out club and I am proud to have put some laps in to help the cause.
I met many new faces and had a great time hanging out when not racing.
Tony, Chris, Ray, and Monte are rockstar team mates and we plan on going again next year!
I am grateful to have such an awesome place to hold an event like this within driving distance, and Alan at Scaleracing (132slotcar) did a great job organizing the event. It was no small task!
