Because the design allows for very fast assembly in China. I believe this is why.
I don't know why for sure, but it's something they changed to a long time ago so asking this is hard because it's just something they do.
Carrera make a pressure system with plates that make contact with other plates/tabs.
Scalextric does this too, but it's a different design but it's NOT a simple wire and eyelet system like most hobbyists expect.
