  • Track Question

Dipping my toe back into HO…been a log time. My question is this….is the an adapter track that will work between my mid 70s AFX track to the newer Tomy/AFX (AW) track? I have tons of the older track I want to use if possible. I have not been able to source an adapter track.
    Thanks!!!

Check this out I think it's what your looking for

This is set of two AFX Adapter Track 3" HO Slot Car Track Sections, for use with AFX HO slot car tracks. Have a bunch of old Aurora AFX track in your garage but need some new pieces and think you have to throw away your old stuff? Well think again! With

Good find, Jeff! MnFordGuy, this is the track adapter you want, it allows connecting to older AF/X FUN track sections like the "Banked S Curves" -- which for some reason weren't carried over to the newer AFX track series. Always loved running T Jets on them. I also acquired a few pairs of 9" straight adapter to go from original AF/X to Model Motoring lock and joiner track, so you can really mix it up for more HO racing FUN! These sections are unfortunately getting a bit pricey as of late, but if they are NOS or in good used condition, are well worth the money. They're shown as out of stock at the moment, let's hope they are back soon, as they get snapped up quickly!
      Enjoy! -- Ernie

What is pictured is not an adapter. The ends are identical. Pictured is what was originally known as a "make up" piece.

The ends are identical because there are two adapter tracks put together.
Look at the center and you can see the joint which matches the drawing above.

Yup. Good eye. I got blinded by the expertly applied sticker!

If you cannot find ready-made adapters it is possible to create them from two sections of track -- one of each type. You need to remove the power rails from both sections, cut each in half, position mismatched halves to make a pair of adapters, reinstall the rails and glue those halves together. The rails will help align the halves before gluing.

You'll probably need to grind away the rail tabs under the track sections to get the rails loose. A Dremel tool does this easily. Be careful not to overheat the plastic while grinding.

You may also need to bend the ends of the rails to match those in the track type you are adapting to. You can superglue the rails in place from underneath. You can reinforce the joints by gluing scrap plastic across the joints underneath the track sections.

If you make nice, square cuts in the track sections and do all your gluing underneath your surgery will be almost invisible. Honest.

This whole procedure has been called "Frankentracking". You can use it to create custom track sections, such as special-length straights and special-angle curves. If you need a 13 inch straight or a 25-degree curve this is your ticket. Really not hard to do, and sometimes the only good solution.

Thank you Ed…looks like I’ll need to go that route. The 70605 adapter’s been discontinued, and looks like it is not available. I have plenty of track to work with, so I can screw up one or two😀

Yes I see that now!!! Thank you gentlemen for the help. Want to get an HO layout for my son without going down another rabbit hole…(already doing 1/32 and 1/25….but my son is crazy for HO). Forgot how much fun the little cars are!

If a set of these adapter track sections can sell for US$100 there is a business opportunity for someone who can Frankentrack them.
