  • 1959 Ferrari Testarossa

    Another diecast conversion. This one was much more involved and took me pretty much all day. I kept the metal chassis, and this proved to involve a lot of work with milling and grinding. I also wanted to keep the full interior so this meant the engine up front and all that goes with a shaft coupling and motor alignment. Finally got it all done and it was funny to see the detailed exhaust manifolds exiting the small Mineabea can . ( another Mineabea motor. Square can but only half the length with similar performance. )I kept the wheels and used my trick of using small small spur gears as wheel hubs for the driving wheels. Changed out the rear tires to urethanes,

    Looking at prototype pictures the roundals on this car are far too small, so I will remove them and add the correct size. I now have to fashion a driver for this car.

      the drive shaft is running in a brass tube? great idea, i like that!
      what did you use to couple the drive shaft to the motor?
      during the ProNoMag, i had a drive shaft coming loose from Tilos cars, that the reason i´m asking. he used a spring for coupling.
      for my 4x4 Beetle, i used a printed drive shaft coupling which i glued with CA to drive shaft and motor axle.

      can you send me the source for those crowns, please?

      the motor is half the size? or three quarters?

        Hi Peter

        Motors are 8x8x14 vs 8x8x20 for the regular motor. This smaller motors tend to get hot when run at 12 volts where as the regular size motors could run all day at 14 volts and never get warm. This leads me to think that if run too hard these motors could fail over time. So far so good in the projects I have done with them.

        Crown gears are a bit of a mystery as to where I got them. It was on ebay from China, and the hole through the center is actually a hex. These were bought some time ago.

        I use silicone tubing for a coupler. I first increased the dia of the motor shaft using wire casing from stripped wire. The rubber coupling was then a tight push fit onto both shafts. I added a spot of CA on each shaft before pushing the coupling on.

              I build my own guides as each car seems to offer different challenges to get it to sit low
