  • Strombecker Dirt Track Racers

Always a favorite to me are midgets and champ cars from the 50's. I have had original Strombeckers and years ago I made a body mold so I could reproduce those cars. I have a couple of cars built with those bodies, but Big Donkey (Larry Baisch) makes a better body for $20 or so. I got a few from him and built runners for my track several years ago. They never got run, so I decided to rebuild them into shelf queens. The chrome suspension on these cars comes from the old Don Edmonds Modified Racer kit from Monogram. It's been re-issued several times and the chrome tree is perfect for this car. I had two sets of chrome left from a case of those cars I bought 20 years ago or so. I still need a front and rear bumper for the red car. Otherwise these two are pretty much done. I pulled out the Sprintplus chassis and put Dynamic inline 16D chassis in their place and replaced silicone Protracks for old tall thin tires like they should have for a correct look. I have a body painted black that is next in line. The yellow car is one of the bodies I made 20 years ago.

These two are from that first batch of bodies long ago. The bars on the flamed car on the right are brass rod and are copied from the way one of the guys on the forum did them a few years ago. The car on the left was built by Tom MIner he is a great modeler and this was a body and chrome I sent him. He returned it to me as a gift 25 years ago. About 3 years ago, I sent it back to his grandson! It is as nice as it looks. Has a set of Ulrich Halibrand mags.

These look great - are the driver figures sourced from the original strombecker?

Looks like you could bend up some bumpers from brass rod of just the right size, then hit it with one of the modern chrome paints.

The #98 car on the right has bars made from brass rod and soldered to the chassis. They are painted with the Molowtow pen. The drivers are from the Monogram 1/24 Hotshot Midget Racer. While they are a little big for the car and most people feel they are more like 1/20 scale they look better than the stock Strombecker driver who looks tine in that car. The stock driver looks more like 1/25 scale. When EJ did his 1/24 midget kit. Tom took a resin driver I made and cut the sleeves off the arms and did some modifying to the arms. I cast that and Ed used it in his kit. I made a few of those divers back then.

You can't beat Larry's price and quality. Those cars can actually run pretty good with smaller tires and a brass belly pan.

Larry also makes a great Monogram Hotshot midget body.

I had wondered where the short sleeve driver that EJ sold came from - thought maybe it was from a static kit version or something I wasn’t aware of.

I had posted a build thread of the big donkey resin midget a few years ago on the old board. Used a sprints plus and added all the brass nets and bumpers etc. Great basis for a slot car - would recommend it.

I think the hot shot midget driver looks pretty good size -wise in the strombecker builds you posted.

Probably was your old Midget build that showed me how to do suspension with brass rod on the Sprintsplus frame. That's what I did on the 98 car and it's how I put front bars on the cars we ran. I did ok with the brass rod, but that kind of work is not what I do best. I barely get by!

The Sprintsplus and the LVJ are good frames for actual racing.

I have 2 LVJ Sprint chassis on the way from Professor Motor and am looking at the Sprintplus chassis at ncphobbies. Do you know what the wheelbase on the Sprintplus chassis is?

MattB: That's great - Really glad the Sprints Plus midget build/thread I had posted back on the old board helped move or inspire another slot car build forward!

Your post/thread here motivates me and others to create more builds. There is a real value when builders post up what they have done and and at least somewhat, how they did it.

I think that is a big reason why I like the "long format" message board over other quick-take social media stuff.

slothead: The Splints Plus wheelbase is 3 inches.
