  • GT40 MKIV in Resin

After many of our home projects had been completed, and with no end in sight for sheltering in place, I decided to embark on a journey into molding and casting. A 1/24 resin replica of a GT40 MK IV had been sitting in its box because it weighed about 90 grams. I decided to make a mold of the model and cast several copies. I learned a lot and my journey is chronicled in an article I wrote. Rather than reprint the entire article, here is a link if you are interested http://slotblog.net/topic/96449-mold...ing-a-journey/ .

So far, I have completed three castings including a fantasy livery, the #2 car that finished fourth at LeMans and the LeMans winner in 67 (the #1 car driven by Gurney/Foyt). Before I cast any more, I want to see how these hold up in a racing environment. There are ways to strengthen the very light shells with fiberglass and other materials that I have not yet tried.
Anyway images of the three cars are attached

They look lovely, well done. 90g seems heavy, even for a 1/24 shell?

90 was the original resin purchased model. The three casts shown are between 25 and 33 grams

Very nice work, the cars look great! What are you using for a chassis?

Those Ford Gt's are Rich's first experiments at resin casting. Pretty good for a first timer. I tried to talk him out of doing a closed car and to stick to an open car for his first body. He did a great job. Notice the pix of his track, he has a nice home built track. Maybe he will even link up some video of his dancing. Rich and his wife are into lots of hobbies. He is pretty good at them all!

                Thanks all,

The MKIV currently sits on a Scholer chassis (no longer available). Zack Morgan of our NW contingent has chassis kits available for those interested. I bought 2 for upcoming builds and they are very similar to the Scholers. Link showing the Scholer chassis Electron Raceway: Gran Sport - Electron Raceway classes - Slotblog

                  BTW,
I needed a lot of technical help because, as mentioned above, this was my first attempt at molding and casting. Thanks to Matt and others for their advice and counsel. This helped me to avoid costly and time consuming mistakes. Their work was also an inspiration.
