‘69 Nova SS Sportsman. First time trying Harry’s method of an adjustable chassis. This was actually an older chassis that has been cut and used for this car. Must say that it was a very easy transition, and will be doing another one for the next project. The Nova is coming along nicely. Besides having to bring the front wheel/tires in a tad, looks to be a contender. The color and decorations are still up in the air. Was almost certain of a Charcoal Pearl finish...but there is some thoughts of a wicked Candy Purple, as suggested by my daughter. So we shall see. Anyhow, here’s few pics of what has been done so far. Will add more to it as the build progresses. This years Showdown looks to be a whopper, as many are doing new projects, and hopefully will inspire new builders to get with it!

Okay...this may be a little long winded, and I’ll do my dangest to leave out the expletives!
Story goes like this...so far...
I had big hopes and dreams of laying down a Charcoal Pearl on this Nova. But my daughter ‘suggested’ to me that it should be a Candy Purple. So I obliged. Went to the local auto body/paint shop, procured what I thought was ‘the best’. House of Kolors Candy Purple. They gave me all the stuff to make it right, primer, base coat, 2k clear. Layed the primer down, looked great. Shot in the base coat, looked even better. Now this evening the real deal went down, Candy Purple. Looked amazing...for about 10 minutes...then all heck broke loose! First it started to orange peel, wait, grapefruit peel! As I stood there watching it in the paint booth, I could actually see the paint crawling! Most likely a bad reaction between all the products, somehow? Within 20 minutes, I was hoping up and down and shouting to the wind, as The Captain scowled and said that’s what you get for dropping $45 for 2.5oz of paint! So you know that didn’t help anything. So, I’m left with this, this, I don’t know what, and no idea what do do next. Scrambling, I hit up Harry, Sam up in PA(master painter), and a few other ‘Professionals’ and asked what the @#$& should I do now? First suggestion, scrap it, take a drink, have a smoke and come back tomorrow. Well, anyone who knows me, understands that just ain’t going to happen!
So, in the 92% alcohol bath it goes. And it goes, and I scrub, and scrub, the purple and base went away, but the primer stuck, wont budge. Now it looks like it is actually etched into the body, I mean it is scared! I’m told this is called crazing. Bummer. What to do now? Get out the grit! 1800-6000 wet sanded till my hands went numb. Still could not get all the crazing out, but does ‘seem’ to look much better. Washed it down, alcohol one more time to see if any more paint would lift, no go. So soapy water bath, rinse, dry, and start over, kinda. Noticing that now that some of the fine details like the vents, logos, etc have disappeared...another oh well. Back in the booth it goes. This time I go back to the old steady, Tamiya light grey primer. It lays down okay for the first light coat, but still see quite a bit of the crazing coming through. So, hit it again, little heavier this time. Still some scaring showing. Okay, one more blast! Well, that got pretty dang close to covering it all. Happy? Not really, but a bit relieved that I didn’t have to go on the hunt for another 69 Nova SS body(almost non-existent). So tomorrow, after all the fumes are cleared and the primer has had enough time to dry completely...Tamiya Purple will go down, and this time it better work! Or into the swamp behind the house the whole project will go! By the way, that’s where the HOK jars are now, probably getting eaten up by that 12’ gator that keeps knocking down my fence! So that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it! Have a nice evening, and remember, just because the price tag is high, doesn’t mean the product is the best...well that’s what I’m going with on this one!

Welcome to the club! It looks like you used all of the same brand, so everything should have been OK.
I was doing a Pioneer Legends kit and I had already used Testors primer when I found out that Testors did not have the color that I needed. I did find the right color at an auto supply place, it was Duplicolor Dark Toreador Metallic. I knew that automotive paints can be hot, so I shot a light coat that looked OK until it dried when it went flat. I was not worried about that because it was going to get a gloss clear finish coat. The paint did not cover in a few places, so I shot a second coat after about 30 minutes with the same results. I waited another 30 minutes and tried a third coat, as that dried everything started to curl up. I have never seen anything like that, but I guessed that the Duplicolor did not get along with the Testors primer. I stripped everything off using denatured alcohol in a sonic bath. Most of the paint lifted off eventually, some scrubbing with a stiff brush was needed. I got some automotive primer and started over with that. The red paint did go flat when it dried, but otherwise I got good coverage with three light coats. I let things dry overnight before I put on some decals . As an added precaution I put two brushed on coats of Future before I applied two coats of Testors gloss clear. The finishing touch was a final coat of Future.. It was a lot of trouble but it worked out well in the end.
I violated my own rule of doing test shots on scrap plastic and paid the price for that.
