SIP 2020 Round 1 - Timberline Trace

Timberline Trace is a 42 ft road course SW of Minneapolis. Routed MDF, latex paint, copper tape, and IR sensing for SlotTrak timing records all of the details.

We are thrilled to be hosting the inaugural round of the 2020 SIP. The track is ready, and cars are prepped.
For this round, we are running 90s GT1 cars with 14K motors at 12V. All cars run on slip-on silicone tires. The cars are Artin or Ninco. We have prepared 10 cars, so some spare drives are available.

Round 1 is complete, and what a round it was.

In an attempt to comply with modern safety regulations, a sand trap was added at the end of the main straight, between Turn 1 and Turn 2. That turned into a serious problem for a number of teams, as gravel was scattered across the racing surface from cars that got into the sand, leading to numerous punctures and offs. Many teams elected to take a short pit stop for tires, the time penalty being made up by the improved lap times.
Suffice to say that the sand trap will be replaced by the next round.

The Mercedes of Slothead Racing suffered a bad start, and feeling down on power tried too hard to regain positions. Multiple spins and a trip through the gravel left them mired in the back of the field.

Chappyman66 was confident with the red F50, but overconfidence led to a visit to the sand. Multiple punctures and a significant off under the Dunlop bridge pushed the wily veteran to the back, fighting to stay ahead of the Mercedes and only just managing.

Hksk25, in the crowd favorite Blue Coral Porsche, was fast in qualifying. They ran consistently but suffered a puncture from the gravel and slowed to avoid damaging the car. New tires showed their speed but the damage was done; a bent upright caused a hop that left them just short of the podium with 49 laps.

The boys of the T-County Lugnuts started off slowly, but it served the yellow F50 in good stead. Consistent driving, staying away from the sand and gravel, and a timely stop for fresh rubber gave them the late speed to surge into third, for a podium finish, only 6 feet ahead of the Porsche with 49.5 laps

The old warhorse shorttail McLaren F1GTR of the VonSirius group was handicapped as a dark horse. But the short wheelbase gave them an advantage on the tight track, and staying clear of gravel and spins put them in a firm second with 53.5 laps and the fastest lap of the race at 6.3 seconds.

The surprise of the round was the purple and white F50 of Racing Bandit. Not the fastest car, they started well, ran hard and smooth, and stayed clean in their pit stops. They ultimately came home triumphant, one half laps ahead of the McLaren GT at 54 laps.

So after an eventful and action packed first round, here is your podium:

A very disappointing day for Slothead Racing. One of those times when everything that could go wrong kinda did. But, the season is just getting started and we're going to remain confident and work our way up the ranks till we secure a season ending podium finish.

However, in the short term we're gonna need time to overcome depression and perk up. Once we recover the cars for Round 2 at Shelby Hendrix Speedway will be revealed and the series will move forward. Teams will be allowed to select cars in the reverse order of the current standings with Slothead Racing taking the last one.
