  • World Championship Proxy - Round 1_Vancouver

The cars are now on route to Alwyn for round 1. A fine host and supporter of many, many proxy events, we are assured of an excellent start to the series.

Good luck to most of you, it appears that there are a few that do not require any additional luck, it might just slow them down!

Thanks Chris: looking forward to receiving these. Assuming the cars get here by the weekend, at this stage I intend doing the Q on my own around next Wednesday. The race itself is planned for Saturday May 1: watch this space!

I know you will do a great job as always.
I have nailed down my position confirmed at #24. The positions above will all be exciting to see how they all work out.
You have all built great cars so let the fun begin!!!

Going to be a well run Round 1 as always. Thanks Alwyn.

I'm going to miss watching that race if its broadcast on the 1st. I'm scheduled for a Boiler inspection in Armstrong, British Columbia for two days that weekend. Going to be tough to concentrate that day knowing that Alwyn is putting on a good show.

            OK guys, an update!

I neglected to show the following image in this thread as well: arrival of the Big Box of Champ cars plus assorted entries for the Can-Am proxy arriving at the same time last week:

Our postie has been a busy boy....

At this stage the plan is for me to do the qualifying this coming Wednesday and the race on Saturday. I also plan on live streaming both events: will provide info closer to the time.

            Good luck to all!

Thanks Zack: a labour of love for sure! It just happened that two proxies converged. Pretty much my own fault as I am the organiser of the Can-Am after all: I should probably have coordinated things better with myself!

And so... Qualifying day has dawned, cloudy and cool but good. I suspect the track will be a bit on the cool side but that will be the same for everybody.

The plan is that I will be heading out to the track a bit later: want to leave after rush hour to not make the drive any longer than the normal 40 minutes in any case. I will then be spending time to set up the computer and cameras for live streaming. Because of the room/track layout and the fact that I have not done this for a while, I am expecting that this will take quite a bit of time, especially with some testing to make sure everything works.

Once all that is good I will: i) give the track a good Swiffering, ii) run "cleaning laps" with urethane tyre cars and then iii) spend enough time running some of my rubber tyre cars to ensure the track is good and ready. There have been two of us running rubber tyre cars for proxy testing recently (for both the world champ proxy and the upcoming Can-Am) so the track is in decent shape.

I am hoping to get all this done and ready to start the Q by 12:30 PDT. I will provide the streaming link at the time.

And to set the expectations and the target/benchmark: in December 2020 Heli_ca Leon's monster Ferrari top Q'd with the ridiculous lap time of 6.496 seconds. Will this time be threatened today? Watch this space....

Thank you Alwyn for the update. My Ferrari is abnormal, a freak, a mutation that just happened, I did not do anything special to that car, and yes it has done good. However, I’m afraid this Porsche will be a different story, it either does very well or very poorly! I’ve taken some chances on this build that are unconventional, the motor, pod configuration, weight distribution, wheels, tires, body mounting and gearing are all a little different! Time will see how the experiments will go!

This car is probably better suited to the longer tracks, but it still does well in the corners.

This car recorded faster lap times than my Ferrari on our club track The Dominator. However, I suspect it may have been my familiarity with the Porsche and the track more so than the car actually being better or faster!

              So fingers crossed!

Leon I'm curious how that big inline will do too. You can get very smooth cars with inline configurations, deep in and out of corners......will be a fun and a learning experience for all of us to watch your car this season.

Thank you for your time and unselfishness in this qualification endeavor. I am sure that all will enjoy your video and constructive feedback (albeit mine may not be very positive as i believe that my car ...will be slip slidin away - hmm i know a song like that!). Look forward to viewing the video after work tonight.

Alwyn what will we do without you? (rhetorical question - just flagging 'cause I do not want to read your response )

Your proxy hosting efforts are hugely appreciated, and we can always rely on a 110% fair representation of all the entries.

I like Leon's approach and "different" thinking with this build. Although I am the only person to have driven all the cars thus far, I am still expecting a few interesting developments.

            Here are a few comments:

            1) it is going to be tight, with only fractions separating the cars (Cpt. Obvious)
            2) #10 will be amazing
            3) expect a few shake-ups from round 0 - some tyres have lost that initial shine/polish & and a much bigger track
            4) a few "new" names towards the top

Good luck to ya'all (trying to make the Southerns feel at home..)

            Chris

Alwyn (like myself) uses a broadcasting program called OBS and within that you can set scenes, either multiple camera's and/or your computer screen - https://obsproject.com/

Thanks for that link Chris. Unfortunately, I'm running Mac OS10.12 and this is for 13 or later. Good news is that I'll most likely be updating my computer within the next year, so I'm bookmarking this link...
