  • Realistic exhaust pipes !!

Over the years I have tried every paint and technique to make realistic looking exhaust pipes (that used weathered steel look) and have used styrene, aluminum, brass, paintbrush ferrules etc. etc., and while I managed to make them look more than acceptable, I always was looking for something better. A few years ago I ran across "Blacken it" in a model train store,......it is a liquid that the train guys use to weather metal, and I now use nothing else !!.....it really does an incredible job.
While not everyone will think it warrants the time/expense (it is actually very easy, quick, and inexpensive ), to some it will be worthwhile, and, it certainly improves the look of any car with exposed pipes.

    Cheers
    Chris Walker

This is the product,......seems to be carried by better train/modeller shops.

These are not the best pics., and they look much better in person, but, this is what bits of brass tubing dunked in this stuff look like.......just like the real thing.......Highly recommended

Curious if you just got that bottle.
A-West Blacken-It hasn’t been available for year. Birchwood Casey written on label is a gun shop; it’s not listed on their website.
The company that made Blacken-It is Jax Chemicals. They list a number of blackeners so a call might be necessary.
Fast acting, water-based metal blackener solutions easily darken aluminum, pewter, brass, bronze, copper, silver, iron, steel or nickel.

Under “blackeners” Micro-Mark only lists Neo-Lube. While it blackens, it’s also used as a lubricant on geared model railroad engines (Shay, Climax).

Hi WB2, I have had my bottle for a year or so,....and looking through some of my "Postimage" pics today, I decided to do a post.

The bottle pictured is not mine, (I stole it from Images) so I know nothing about Birchwood Casey, if the product is no longer available, well,.....that is a shame, as it really is terrific.......hopefully it can still be found.

Well, shoot. Plastic tubing has always looked to thick for exhaust pipes.
Why doesn't my car run like that?
