Over the years I have tried every paint and technique to make realistic looking exhaust pipes (that used weathered steel look) and have used styrene, aluminum, brass, paintbrush ferrules etc. etc., and while I managed to make them look more than acceptable, I always was looking for something better. A few years ago I ran across "Blacken it" in a model train store,......it is a liquid that the train guys use to weather metal, and I now use nothing else !!.....it really does an incredible job.
While not everyone will think it warrants the time/expense (it is actually very easy, quick, and inexpensive
), to some it will be worthwhile, and, it certainly improves the look of any car with exposed pipes.

This is the product,......seems to be carried by better train/modeller shops.
These are not the best pics., and they look much better in person, but, this is what bits of brass tubing dunked in this stuff look like.......just like the real thing.......Highly recommended
