  • NSR Porsche 917/10

    Oh yeah, it’s on now!
Nice offering by NSR. Body is wider than the Fly 917/10, same body length, but longer wheelbase. The Fly is more detailed. Test hits so far have it competitive with other NSR Classics. Will see if we can get it up to snuff to compete in our CanAm class against some very fast ThunderSlots.

Nice score. You must be the first on your block with one of these. Looking forward to your comments after you’ve finished tuning.

Out-of-the-box the NSR Porsche 917/10 turns 6.5 sec/lap on my track (a fast lap for a tuned car is 5.5 sec/lap or lower). Very wide track, front and rear, longer wheelbase than the Thunderslot cars, and can accommodate 12mm rear tires with no problems. I chose #6 for may CanAm entry because it gave me 3 Mark Donahue choices; the Sunoco #6 Porsche 917/30 (a beautiful 3DP from Chappyman66 off a Nimrod file), the NSR L&M Porsche 917/10 and the Thunderslot Sunoco #6 McLaren M6A. This one is very tempting, but for me, its going to have to be a "next time" car, because I don't have the time to tune it before the proxy deadline. For those who do, I think that just on a dimensional basis, it will provide you with a good race car. The only issue will be the significantly higher COG, the big wing/weight overhang in the rear and the fact that the decaled and over-coated body will probably come in at around 17-18 gms. But, it is a sharp looking car. Good for NSR for bringing this one, as well as the Porsche 908, to market! I suspect that they went with the 917/10 rather than the 917/30 just based on the fact that there are many more 917/10 liveries to choose from.

Allan, so I am reading; nice car, not as fast as the Thunderslot, you are not going to waste your time to try and make it competitive, good luck to those that want to try!

No, not really, Chris. It's more a matter of not having the time as opposed to being concerned about wasting it. If we did not have 4 proxies with due dates, essentially, one month after each other, it would be a different story. But, we do and, unfortunately, I don't have the time to spend on a NSR Porsche 917/10 right now - although I would like to........... Tuned, it will be a very fast car; you can feel that when you pick it up from the shipping case.

you forgot about the Penske/Donahue Elva.

      Thanks for the 917/10 info.

Hey, wanted to let you know...been doing some tire testing with the new NSR Porsche 917/10. The wider tires don’t do this car any justice whatsoever. Quick Slicks CB34-35’s knocked almost a full tenth off on our track. The sidewalls on the wider tires flex too much, even with the extra firm Quick Slicks TS43’s. Try it and see if you come up with the same opinion. Wider is NOT always better!

Piece of .035 up front & under rear axle. Knocked down magnet pockets, .016 on pod. Weight is 72g.
A .005 steel spacer on all 4 corners. 1mm spacer + .005 on the fronts. Stance is much more gooder now, handling too. Less than a tenth, .07 from my fastest TS that is very hard to beat on a good day. Not even broke in yet!
Stock guide too, which I’ll change out to the deeper NSR guide here in a moment.

Otherwise, nice car. Quick, responsive and will certainly be a contender in the CanAm & NSR Classics Classes.

Yes, wider in the rear is not always faster........that's for sure......particularly with a wide-track car. But, it's sometimes hard to compare rubber vs silicone tire performance.

        Allan

    • #7
Allan, not at all trying to compare rubber/urethane to silicone. We run exclusively silicone here, so that is the only avenue testing will go down. The stock wheels on this 917/10 are the same as the 917k wheels. The stock rubber tires on this 917/10 are too wide for the wheels IMHO. Go to a wider wheel, glue and true, and they will most likely be just fine. Huge difference in performance for me going to the narrower tire on the stock wheel.

        Very nice, car looks great!

Did you paint over the clear (assuming this was the white "test" car) or did you remove it, and if you did, how? Also assuming the blue is a decal, any advice on how to deal with the wheel vents? Did you cut the decal when it was still wet?

        Sorry about the 100 questions!

Yes, it is the NSR 917/10 white test car. No, I did not strip the clear. Roughed it up a bit with some 3000 wet. Painted the silverleaf on the rockers. Then reshot a light coat of clear. All the color but the silver are decals. Don't have the patience or steady hand to slit the vents in the decals. Used some Micoscale to soften and form the decals. They look good enough for me. Atalaya decal set. All that Atalaya decals I have gotten from them tend to be on the thin side, so be careful when applying. Have tried clear lacquer over them in the past without success, silvering. First coat of Future went down nice and smooth, will do another later. A few little details to tighten up and we’ll call it good. Overall its a good looker, not quite up to snuff for the rivet counters. This livery was my favorite HO slot car back in the 70’s. Have always wanted to do this livery in 1/32, and almost ‘sacrificed’ a Fly many times. Now if it’ll take down the CanAm monsters here, Thunderslot, all will be copacetic.

Looks like winner. Is that driver figure one piece or can you replace the helmet with one more inline with early 70's

Going to race this RC #23 this Saturday. It will go up against some of the best drivers and fastest ThunderSlots in Florida. Could just be a ThunderSlot CanAm killer! Mine flat out rips!
Gonna be a real barn burner.

As I wrote, I wanted to run the 917/10, but in a proxy where >30 drivers will test the car, one that is easier to drive would probably be a better entry.
I like the 917/10 though. I’m currently creating a Lowenbrau livery and will post to this thread when finished.
