  • No lap Counter or CU found!

Nor did The software find a D132 timing device!

We've have been running Bruce's RMS all this last holiday season. Old computer pooped out and new one doesn't recognize the CU. All the nieces and nephews are gone but now the adult kids want to race.
Would like to get it going again.
Apologies for my first post being the "Please help. Stuck on the side of the road. Need your help. Is anybody going to save me? I can't play with my toy cars and as a fellow human, you must stop what you're doing and offer me assistance." post.

Kicked around the forum but didn't find anything that sounded like this issue. Seems simple but I haven't bumped into the solution as yet. Click image for larger version

      We're getting somewhere . . . .

Looks like new computer needs a driver. Not sure what that means though. Click image for larger version

A driver is a bit of software that allows a computer to see a piece of hardware like a hard drive or graphics card. USB devices have the driver built in, so you do not have to install a driver, however the first time that you plug in a new USB device it will take the computer a moment to read the driver and install it on your hard drive. I use Trackmate and there is a driver for that needs to be installed before it will work.

Yes and even though USB devices have built in driver that will work, there are sometimes better drivers available by searching online.

Below is a link to the Google search for the driver
        Looks like it's still available.

Left click Windows icon (lower left corner), type "device Manager" (it's also found in Control Panel), then left click on the suggestion as it appears above, go through the list of devices (expand them by clicking on the caret to their left), the right click the offending device (should have yellow exclamation or question mark next to it), left click "update driver", left click "search automatically for drivers" in the popup, if none is found, then left click on "search online" for updated driver. Sometimes even though they all have drivers, they are not necessarily the most current. Therefore, it may require going down the list and checking multiple drivers for an updated version. HTH

The TTL-USB chips in these cables do *not * have built in drivers. They have pretty much always required a download. Windows 10 will recognize some FTDI chips and automatically install appropriate drivers- but apparently it's choking on this one. Will need a download.

I have an older Trackmate interface and that needs a serial input. Newer computers do not have serial inputs, so I had to buy a serial to USB adapter, that was not just a plain cable, it also included some electronics, but the driver was not built in. A disc with the driver was included along with the adapter.
I once had a USB device stop working. After you plug a device into your computer the first time the driver is installed on your hard drive. Apparently the driver on the hard drive got corrupted or deleted, I had to uninstall the device using Device Manager, then plug the device back in, after which it worked OK.
I bought a new desktop computer late last year and that one has software that looks for updated drivers and tells me that they are ready to install.

Have had some luck here. Using a Carrera D124/D132 USB Interface from digital racing solutions....It did need a driver download. Followed some simple instructions from their site. Software is now finding the race track. Seems to work but still may look for updated drivers as suggested.

Probably need a fresh downloaded copy of the RMS now as well. Can't end my practice sessions.

Thank you all for responding with solutions.

A timed session should time out, a session that is just lap counted should end when you hit the ESC key on the keyboard (or right click on the race screen and end it from the popup menu)?

Despite 12+ years of updates, fixes, bugs, and general problems- I've never known *this* to fail?

After investigation, we have determined the issue was pilot error. As computer guy around the racetrack, I forgot some of the basics - - - like the ESC key. I could blame some of it on the new computer but mostly it is lack of actually using the system since visiting family went home after the holidays.
All is well. Just need to play more and work less.

One reminder: years ago, Windows programs pretty much all gave you context sensitive help whenever you pressed the F1 key. I'm so old that HSSRMS still does that. So if you have other questions (I'm sure you will), just remember *most* answers are a keystroke away.

FYI - USBDeview is a free Windows utility by NirSoft that is really helpful for sorting out USB connection issues like this - here is a link to download direct from NirSoft beware of other links on a Google search - https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

I to have had a problem with losing the connection between PC and CU since getting my track up and running again after 2 year break.

Wonder if there was a Windows update that is now causing my problem.

Using Windows 7... Once the HSSRMS is running there is no problem during the racing. I have found that if I close the program then restart later, that I get the can't find device message. I then have to go into the device manager to disable the USB com port and then enable to get the PC and CU to communicate again. Kind of annoying but it works. Just wonder if I am maxing out the capabilities of the PC with USB connections. Have USB stuff coming out everywhere.

Keyboard, Mouse, Adapter connecting an Arduino and Relay Power, Wifi Adapter, can't recall what else.

Also noticed that the CU always seems to connect to Com 7. Thought that should should be more random.

I will continue to keep an eye on this thread for a solution.

The com port should always be the same- unless you uninstall from device manager. Which might be a good idea. Disconnect the cable, uninstall (not just disable) the device, then connect the cable and re-install the device.
