  • Surprise Surprise Surprise..

    Without getting into the back story I told a dear friend of mine I would work on her deceased husbands 1968 Pontiac Tempest. Little did I know what I was getting into. Very little oil making it to rocker arms so today I pulled the intake manifold to have a look. Needless to say I now have to pull the motor. I did this kind of work years ago but at my age I am not a happy camper.

    I hope you didn't bite off more then you can chew , good luck with the rebuild

      I think the Blues Brothers will be your motivation for this project. Keep reminding yourself you're on a 'Mission from God'.

      Think of the pride you'll have when you save the orphanage, so to speak. Someday, that '68 Tempest will purr like a kitten again.

                    That looks sludgy.
                    Poncho enginese can be real expensive to rebuild, but aren't they all anymore. If it were mine I'd do an LS conversion. I have a '68 too, the Tempest's muscular sibling.

                      After 50 some years of auto mechanics (for myself). I don't want to work much at all on cars anymore. My BB Chevelle needs valve seals. Like all my cars, I did it from the ground up. I used my 396 crank with a 454 block and had a local engine shop build me a 427 short block. I used my old 396 heads and I guess the seals were nearly bad and now they need replaced. I am going to talk a local hot rodder into doing it in his one man shop. I'd rather pay than work!

                      Here's funny story about gunked up engines. Back int he 80's when street rodding was starting to grow, our club used to go a rod run most every Sunday. Paul (owned a repair shop) had a 38 Pontiac sedan. He got a junk yard engine for it. I believe it was a 321. could have been a 389, I don't remember. We stopped for gas and he checks his oil. No oil on the dipstick. He dumps in 2 quarts and it still doesn't show on the dipstick. He says he knows it will ok and we drive on to the run site. We had a group of usually 4-8 cars running together. At the park, we are all standing around being experts and Paul decides he should put in more oil, he dumps another quart in. Still doesn't show. It is decided he needs to pull a valve cover. He does and probably a quart of oil runs out, same with the other side. We find out Paul put htis junk yard engione in the car without taking apart anything. The oil return holes are closed down to less than an 1/8 inch with sludge

                      Another time we stop at a food mart and Paul is driving his 38 Chevy coupe. Everybody parks and goes in and one guy notices smoke coming out of Paul's. He sees it is coming out from under the dash and yells at Paul. Paul says don't worry, it will stop!

                        What's funny is this is a video I took last year after it's multi year slumber. After draining the tank and rebuilding the carb eventually I got it to run halfway decent with exception of an occasional miss/stumble in the engine.

                          No need to pull the motor . Drain the engine of oil - then put some 10 weight oil through it(oil change)
                          Think there is a product called Seafoam that you could try(youtube)
                          I would think that if the engine is gunked up like that, that the rest is probably the same
                          Change the trans and rear diff oil

                            Don't bother rebuilding it Dave. Just put a new RMS 30k motor in it
