My first reaction was that this comment is very, very sad. My second reaction was that this is cause for concern if it means that as a rule we cannot think laterally.

But then again: my so-called "friends" have been known to say I think so laterally I can no longer think straight... And even in my case I have had a terrible fail in this regard. My son sent me the following some time ago:

To get this you have to be able to recognize planes from that era and know the lyrics to that (great) song. Most people wouldn't have that knowledge.

Yes, my comment on the example that I posted was not aimed at the general public. The reason why I criticised myself in that case is because both my son and I are music and aeroplane lovers. So for me the above image should have been an absolute gimme. To have missed it, even for a moment, was hugely embarrassing. So my point was, if I could miss something that is so totally up my street, I should not judge others for missing the clamp your hams pic.

I was just making the point that what we may think of as common knowledge often isn't all that common. And you're right, even when someone knows the required background info they still have to 'relax' their thinking enough to have it connect as needed. Like 'relaxing' your focus enough to see the embedded structure in a 3D image.
