  • La Carrera Panamericana

You see a lot of posts on HRW about Can Am race cars, Trans Am race cars, Le Mans, etc. I have been drawn to the largest endurance racing event hosted on the North American continent. La Carerra Panamericana. I stumbled upon this racing event on a Youtube channel and have been obsessed by the cars & drivers & history of it ever since. I love the fact that ordinary people have been entering the event since its inception, in the early 50's
Please comment if you have any interest in this race or post any photos of cars; real or that you have built or modeled here. If there is enough interest maybe Harry could host a race with cars modeled after some of the cars that took place back in its beginings?

We have had a La Carrera Panamerica proxy in the past.

That's great! Any chance there are some photos of the cars that participated?

Have you checked out the movie La Carrera Panamericana with music by Pink Floyd or the book La Carrera Panamericana by Johnny Tipler?
Forget the sports cars. My favorites are the old Studebakers and Oldsmobiles with the NASCAR undertrimmings.

I’m with you on the big American iron, Buick for me though. 1954’s ran in it and my first car was a ‘54 Roadmaster. That would be fun to make for slots!

Yes, I've watched everything I can find on You Tube about the race. Great video and I love the scenery & culture it shows.

I’d be interested, but I can’t find a 1954 Buick slot car to run! 😃

Not saying that car is available, but you’d me amazed at the “oddball” cars available as 1/24 resin castings.

Yes, as Mitch58 notes there was a proxy on the old board. Several threads with lots of photos, but I am not sure they will still be there. Probably some folks still have their cars and can post them.

The link to the old forum board appears to be broken.

Not sure what the HRW principals can do, but it would be unfortunate that all that info and photos are now lost.

Both the "Panamerica" and the "Last open road" proxies were for 50's/60's production based sportscars........all with slow motors, and skinny tires 😀

My Corvette SR2 and Porsche 550 were lucky enough to win their respective classes in the "Last open road" proxy run a few years ago

And my Porsche 356 won a couple of early rounds of the "Panamerica" also run a couple of years ago........before the motor "coughed"

I did a Tucker and then cracked the resin body and didn't send it in. I overdid it with mud splatter anyway and you could barely see the decals. But it was a huge event, with lots of master modelers involved. I can't get the old site to work, and I desperately want all that info kept. It was the peak of the slot car good times, by prices, association, and enthusiasm.

Seriously! And what ever happened to Shotgundave? Cool Tucker there Rob! Some day I may set up that plastic track layout again along with the wood track, kind of miss it.

I have a pic of my car The Ferrari, and TSGRET’s Mercedes from the last one we entered.
sadly TSGRET, is no longer with us, but I was able to purchase his entry from the estate. Turns out we grew up in the same city, although some years apart. We had opportunity to chat and reminisce about our home town and share slot car stories.
would be interested in another Panamerica, last one was fun.
