Praise for one of the best racing series ever - original Can-Am

Back in the late 60's I was intrigued by the Trans Am series that featured cars I could possibly own - Mustangs and Cougars. Then I learned about the Can-Am series with amazing cars I could not ever hope to own by could worship. I know many of us on HRW love these cars so I thought I'd start a thread to honor them. Please post photos of cars you love and thoughts/info about the series.

I'll start things off with one of the most iconic Can-Am cars - Peter Revson's 1972 McLaren M20 Can-Am car.

Can Am cars are at the top of my list, just under Indy cars of the 60's. The actual racing was not so close, but the cars and imagination were second to none. At 14 years old, I followed the Chaparrals. They were the only slot cars I ran. I still have both the 2D's I built in 65. One is the Daytona style body and the other the Cox style . Those were the only bodies I could get at my local track and it was my only source. I've been a fan of Jim Hall ever since.

When I started this thread I knew Chris would join in and share images of his masterful builds. The photo in my initial post is of a full size restored McLaren and all I have for slot cars are RTR ones from multiple manufacturers. My favorites include a FLY Porsche 917/10, McLarens from HSRR, Monogram, and Slot.It, and a CGslotcars Shadow DN4 .

I hope others post images of Can-Am cars they like and track shots, both full size and scale versions.

See the thread by Racer1h of the Covid CanAm cars....he built almost 3 dozen cars in 2020 during the lockdown, most of them CanAm cars.

A few of the more "less well known" CanAm cars from the 1966 season.........other than the Cooper Monaco T61, these were built by "backyard" shops.

The Veedol Chinook looks like a Chaparral 2C.....because it was, basically. They took a model of the 2C and scaled it up. My guess is the Marx 1/24 version since it had the chin spoilers....but just a guess.

For what it's worth, there is a file available for the Chinook.

And yes, it makes a passable 2C with some modifications.

I was thinking the same thing at 180 degrees. Looks like it wouldn’t be a ton of work to convert a 2C into the Chinook since that’s basically how the 1:1 was built

Jay Esterer (a good Canadian !!) purchased and rebuilt the Chinook a few years ago,.....he regularly races it in Vintage meets across North America, and at the Goodwood "Revival".....he has won at Goodwood a couple of times, and is always at the sharp end of the grid.

A short clip from Goodwood, showing a good battle for the lead,....if you have never been to Goodwood, the drivers do not treat the cars with kid gloves !!!!

Yep, the British guys really race their vintage cars. And often severely damage them.

I didn't expect to see these incredibly valuable cars raced that daringly. Then again, how would a race car driver not want to get all he can out of cars built to be beasts on the track.

Unfortunately, there are no Historic Cam-Am races scheduled in America this year as we still live under the cloud of the pandemic.

Look on youtube for "Goodwood Revival",......there are many videos of several classes of cars that are run annually at this event,..........every car is taken to the limit, and often beyond !!

There are videos of mutlimillion dollar cars (original Gt40's and GTO Ferraris etc.) being "punished" ,.......clearly a hobby for the very wealthy !!

I think I saw a 3DP version of this Shadow somewhere but can’t find it now. An era and racing class with lots of innovation. I attended the Mid Ohio race in ‘69 or ‘70.

While CG slotcars did produce a couple of the Shadow cars, I do not believe that this was one of them.

I believe that they only produced the DN4 and the Mk1 "lowline"
