  • Finally Back Up

    Well.....
About a month and a half ago I decided I wanted an all metal hot end for my Ender3 so I could do glow in the dark and other abrasive filaments.

I ordered one from Buperor, because the MicroSwiss had mixed reviews (although the one on my Dremel works great). Bad idea. After several problems culminating in unstable temperatures and an inability to run a PID cycle to calibrate the thermistor, I was out of commission for 6 weeks. Pretty frustrating because several cool bodies were waiting for me.......

So I finally ordered the original replacement hot end for $20, plugged it in, and voila, running again.

So in the last few days, this is my output:
Ferrari 350 Can Am, HonkerII, McKee MkX, and Ferrari 712.

For those who have wondered about removing the support, here is the 712 fresh off the printer:

With light (7%) support and the 0.5 mm vertical offset, the support pretty much peels right out:

These bodies are super light and makes excellent cars. I am absolutely stoked to put my CanAm field together.

And btw...the high tailed MkI Shadow will be next on the list....

There are lots of great body files and plenty of chassis out there.....print some cars!

Thanks for the support settings Paul, I've ruined my share of printed bodies by being overly aggressive when removing support materials!

Keep on pushing! I don't know what it all means, but I like that you can create desirable bodies "at home".

The support settings are a recent revelation. Racer1h has got some other magic going on.....he has tweaked things so his surface finish is almost smooth, requires very little sanding. I haven't got that figured out yet.....but these definitely aren't bad.

          Chappy,
If you are using CURA, try turning "ironing" on. Just search for ironing in the settings search field and turn it on with default settings. It uses very little filament and the heat of the nozzle to basically iron out the top layer. Yes, it gives a great finish.

            Hi Pete,
Yep, I know about ironing. I am somewhat unconvinced of it's utility....especially in later versions of Cura (I am running 4.4.4 right now). I am getting 27 hour prints when I used to get 12-13 hours so Simplify 3D is back in use until I figure that one out.
We will compare notes....my guess is top layer speed probably matters and if you slow that down you may get a better finish.

              Chappy,
Yes, I know ironing adds time to prints. And I am using it to make chassis, of all things!?!? I am using Cura 4.4.1. Still discovering all the little details.

I wouldn't advise the ironing if you have the self-leveling feature on your printer. Mine has the dual head and when one head was extruding the other one would be dragging on the extruded part picking up the plastic. The the extruder heads wouldn't complete a circuit for the self-leveling which led to a major printer failure and it looks like my unit won't even be covered under warranty for the companies lack of support since I bought it.
