Found a new brand of masking tape recently and thought I would give it a try. Jingling tape for painting nails comes in a six roll pack with sizes from 0.5 to 6mm X 25m for about $10 on Amazon. Tamiya tape was on back order so I decided to try this out. It is apparently used to make those elaborate designs they paint on fingernails. Looks like Tamiya and first use for masking rattle can lacquer went OK. Tomorrow I’ll spray a side by side with the Tamiya and post the results.

This is very interesting. I found that the very cheap manicure kit that is for sale all over the place is very handy when cleaning up resin castings. In addition to a tiny dremel-type grinder, there are dozens of attachments and doodads. -
Chris, thanks again for that great tip.Come Race at The Trace!

I went and looked at the different tapes by this company and it is all around $10. Amazon has the Tamiya 18mm 3 rolls for $12. I think I will stick with Tamiya. If you burnish Tamiya down good, you can usually add a second color without the bleed problems. If you use tape from Walmart or the hardware store you will need to use the clear trick as Chris mentioned to keep your color from bleeding under the tape.
I've used the expensive blue tape and the green Frog tape and wasn't happy with any of them. I like the Tamiya and 3 rolls will last a long time.Matt B

For tiny little pinstripe type stuff on 1/32nd, I use Tamiya, well burnished, and I never needed to clear seal. But if you don't want to buy a $5 burnisher with 3 heads included...
Anyway, I mask a lot, and I find Tamiya tapes best by far, so far in my painting, but this fingernail stuff sounds good.Comment

I kinda thought for 10 bucks it would be entertaining to play around with new stuff while I waited for the Tamiya. Thanks for the tip, Chris-spot on as always. For this comparison I wanted to test the new stuff vs. the gold standard with a simple burnish with my wood stick. I obviously rushed the job on the Tamiya, but the other tape faired pretty well. And nice to have several widths for different stripes from time to time.Mike V.

I burnish with a soft cloth and that seems to work fine. I bet the fingernail tape is pretty good. If it works for fine art on fingernails, it should be fine for our use. Since Tamiya is good and nearly the same price, I am happy with it.Matt B
