  • 60 Corvette racer

Moving on to this 60 Corvette that was part of the glue bomb stash that I picked up. Think it's an AMT or MPC kit.

Missing some parts but there's enough to make a slot car.

Submerged the body in a bath of Rough Rider degreaser overnight and had no problem scrubbing the paint off with an old tooth brush compared to the 63 Sting Ray build's shell.

Going to tackle the body initially, not my usual beginning of chassis first, but there's a lot of prep work this time.

Never did get one of the Ninco 57 Corvette racers so I'm going for the same treatment.

Filled in the engine induction opening and formed a cockpit hard cover from Sintra plastic.

Taped the front end temporarily to get an idea of the look.

      Yep, on the right path.

        Slow but good progress.

Lots of shaping and sanding. Opened up the hard tonneau cover and test fit the driver figure and rollbar (3/32" brass rod).

Will let cure while waiting for a JK F1 motor bracket for the chassis build.

Back to the larger scale build.

Put together my usual ladder inline chassis consisting of:

.055" piano wire - main rails and front axle support
              .064" x 3/4" brass strip - guide tongue
4mm brass tube - front axle holder
JK F1 motor bracket (3/4" wide)
              Sloting Plus 3mm bushings
              Sloting Plus 3mm axles
BRM front and rear Trans Am rims with homemade urethane tires

Final stance will be close as I like it low.

Progress on the cosmetics. Installed the paint detailed five-spoke wheel inserts, resin copies from trimmed down wheels out of the Monogram Owens Corning 427 Corvette kit. Mocked in the driver figure and single hoop rollbar.

Looks period appropriate to me, so onto the final body color.

Great job all round Dan..,......I especially like the driver............

A little modelling tip if I may..............in future, sand the molded in goggle strap off the helmet, and use a thin strip of black cloth hockey tape for the strap,.......looks much more realistic, and,.....certainly reduces your blood pressure ......you can also use a strip for a helmet strap !!

                          Cheers

Got final coats on, Tamiya TS-60 Pearl Green and TS-7 Racing White. Details (headlight covers, grille, roll bar, tailight bezels) painted in dark gray to match the wheel spokes. A few finish blemishes but good enough for racer that's going to be banged about.

Quite pleased when the "salvage" works out.

                            Onto the Lotus 11 build.
