  • 63 Corvette Stingray resto mod

    Jumping back into 1/24th.

Had watched an episode of Bitchin Rides showing a resto mod Stingray entered at a car show. A few days later, got a model kit glue bomb stash with an AMT 63 Corvette Stingray amongst the ruins. Well, the light bulb turned on and the latest project was born.

Hit a stumbling block right out of the gate with the old paint resisting chemical stripping. My Rough Rider de-greaser and 99% isopropynol alcohol had no affect on removing the decades old paint. With my limited patience, I just resorted to sanding to get a good base for Tamiya white primer that'll eventually be painted with a final coat of white. At least the light tone will hide the expected so-so paint finish.

So, cut metal pieces for a simple inline chassis...

.055 piano wire - main rails and front axle uprights
.032 piano wire - side pan spring hinges
    .063 x 3/4" brass sheet - guide tongue
    .032 x 3/4" brass sheet - side pans
5/32" brass tube - guide tube
4mm brass tube - front axle holder

    ...and gathered pieces.
JK F1 motor bracket, 3/4" wide
    Sloting Plus 3mm axle bushings
    Sloting Plus 3mm axles
BRM Group C BBS Gold front wheels
Avant Slot Hurricane boxer motor with Plafit 8t pinion and 27t crown gears
Sloting Plus Universal guide, 7mm deep

    Moving forward.

Interested in how this comes together since I have a 1/32 body I’ve been mulling over for a project

Chassis's soldered and rolling. Took some time but got it flat and square.

Mocked the body on. Going for this stance with final body mounting.

Always liked the AMT 63 Vette yours looks great!! whenever you need to strip paint from a styrene plastic model use easy-off oven cleaner (Heavy Duty) not the fume free i put the parts in a plastic shoe box spray it down with the oven cleaner and put the lid on for a day or two then while wearing gloves use an old tooth brush to remove all the paint even the thickest paint jobs clean right off looking forward to seeing this done.

@ Fitzy - Will try that oven cleaner next time.

Good progress before the holiday festivities.

Chassis's powered and it's smooth and driveable. Set up for either a two-post (front and rear) or three-post (front, both sides) body mounting. For the sake of expediency, went with the former but will do a three-post later.

Tried Easy Off to remove the paint and no go. Wow, never had such stubborn paint before. No matter, just lightly sanded more and sprayed a few coats of Tamiya fine white primer. That'll do.

Filled the hole in the hood with some engine induction detail. Cut and counter-sunk 1/8" aluminum tubing and inserted into a platform of Sintra plastic that fit nicely into the opening.

Like to use as much of the kit's interior tray, so ended up cutting out a lot to make way for that big boxer motor. The remaining detail, mostly the dash, is worth it to me.

After looking at the old sanded blue paint for weeks, I'm going with a light blue pearl finish with a matt black interior.

Daaaaang thats a really sharp build! Great fitment and stance.

Lacquer can leach into the pores of the plastic. It happens to me all the time. I just do the best I can. Seal it. Let it cure good. Then repaint, and fuggedaboudit.

Paint detail to come with clear finish to follow, then window installation and we're ready for the track.

Pretty much done. Paint detailed trim in light gray and glued in windows and interior tray.

A few small modeling details to go but not hindering a test run which revealed a smooth and driveable ride.

                      Another good result.

                      Back to 1/32 scale.
