Our group (and others in the Greater Toronto and Golden Horseshoe Area) race them box stock at 10 volts on wood routed tracks with the following changes allowed; rear tire change to urethanes, screw mounted guides, and either the white or the orange end-bell stock Slot.it motor. Weight is allowed - it's almost a must with the newer cars being so light. They are all very competitive with each other due to the limited changes allowed.

Just curious, what is the white Slot.it motor referenced in some of the posts? Not the 25k older motor that was SO easy to drive! And was replaced for some.... never mind don’t want to know why they replaced that older really smooth, liner band motor!!! Is that the same motor you still run?🤔 I really liked that motor! Can you tell!

With regard to my post, yes I was referring to the original 25k RPM motor. The local clubs that race this class began doing so back when the white endbell motors were standard issue, so we decided to leave that option in place.

That stock 25K white endbell was easy to drive you are right. I think it stopped getting produced around 2006 and replaced with the orange end bell.

We run the Group C cars as the only class of RTR racing where tuning is permitted, but only using Slot.It parts. Magnets need to be removed.

To be honest, nobody's yet gained much of an advantage from any setup one to the other and you can turn up with a brand new purchase, loosen the screws and run well. In general, the Lancias and the Toyotas are probably the fastest out of the box, but there's very little in it. We run on Ninco track and F22 rear tyres are the best that we've found on the back, zero grips on the front. I've got a Porsche 962 KH running with a Flat-6 motor and suspension (spring not magnet), a lightweight interior and short gearing for our twisty 4-lane. It's competitive.

The Jaguars are the slowest on our track. Even after swapping motors, gears and removing the spats to increase the rear track to the limit they're still twitchy for some reason. The Saubers are quick but the rear wing is just the right height to hook up on the barriers if you corner too quickly. That's why I stick with the Porsche - it's robust, and it doesn't get stuck on the wall if you run wide!

Thanks everybody for your contributions. I have received no less than 17 detailed messages - most positive and very interesting. There is a clear trend of adding weight in many cases which surprised me. Also different tyre, motor and motor mount combinations. In some cases tyres could not be glued and in one there was even a minimum body weight (18gms). Most raced non-magnet.

Do not think I have ever weighed mine (bodies) but they have certainly gotten lighter. As they cannot be changed has never been a consideration. Must weigh some. Generally most stuck very close to standard except as mentioned and slight body easing for movement as intended. Some people commented the advent of weight was largely because of bodies getting lighter but others stated too much weight slowed them down too much. Interesting though in my opinion still not allowed locally (interpretation uncertainty on my part) but a slottie mate in Wellington who has been using weight said the same thing.

From my point of view no car should have weight added until you have it going smoothly and driveable. It disappoints me that some people are adding as matter of course before even trying. When everybody else does it whether necessary or not is hard not to follow suit or even a matter of survival. In NZ now though we have some classes with minimum weight so there is not much option.

I agree with your comments regarding weight. Most, if not all of our classes allow it, but personally I only add weight to improve the car's handling characteristics and usually that means adding it down low to keep the car from tipping, but sometimes to improve rear traction or to keep a guide planted in the slot. The heavier a car is the slower it will be to accelerate and to brake and when there are limits on motor power reducing weight is the only way to improve power to weight ratios.

                        Steve

                    • #13
Weight in our cars is almost a given because it is bumpy with elevation and camber changes and many rough joints between the sections.

Correct tyre choice minimises the need for weight because the surface is still good and abrasive but you do need something behind the guide in almost every class, the exceptions being things with drop arms and/or suspension.

I run in a few clubs and the rules are the same to make racing as close as possible. All stock besides guide, weight and tuning. Control tyre.

                          Same rules with the DTM

Group 5 similar but allowed air rims and any offset pod.

Close racing is fun racing !
