a slot,it car i have came with a ,5 offset pod and the standard yellow 29t gear. i always thought an offset pod needed an offset gear. is there any reason to use an offset gear?im also switching to a 27t gear.

I believe we are talking about a crown gear. The technical term for a crown gear designed to operate with an offset is known as a hypoid gear. A hypoid gear has the shape of its teeth modified to allow efficient operation with an offset. You can see the difference between a hypoid gear and a regular crown gear.
